Norsk Tipping

Norsk Tipping is currently the only entity allowed to offer gambling on sports betting and casinos in Norway. They do also offer lottery games, scratchcards and keno.

Given the strict focus on reducing harm caused by gambling addiction , they have put in place several measures to mitigate the risk of becoming addicted:

  • reduced opening hours for sports betting (07:00 - 03:00) and other casino games (07:00 - 01:00)
  • clearly visible and recurring mentions of “spillvett”
  • limits in place for how much you can gamble per day and month

Poker in Norway

Since 2015, live poker games in private homes have been legal. If the game is played in a private home. The number of participants does not exceed 20 players, and the highest total bet amount each gathering, for each player is 1000 NOK.

History

This laws main purpose is to:

  • prevent and reduce harm caused by gambling addiction
  • ensure gambling is done in safe and fair ways
  • make sure profits from gambling goes to non-commercial purposes

The Norwegian government is incredible fierce in it’s pursuit to block foreign actors from opening their services to Norwegian customers.

On 1 January 2021 a new ruling was introduced by the Norwegian Media Authority where they forced all Norwegian TV distributors to seize showing advertisement for gambling sites that did not have a license to operate in Norway. This saw immediate results in terms of ad spending when it came into effect August 2022. The amount of ads shown between August and December 2022 was lower than the whole of June 2022.

As of 1 January 2024, offshore gambling sites will be DNS-blocked for Norwegian customers. I over ti år er det blitt snakket om.
